Streams
Talk 1: How autism affects the family and improving family relationships (9:15-10:15am)
An autistic child has an impact on the rest of the family - especially the siblings. Learn how to improve children's relationships with each other. Life can be tough for parents too. Feel supported and understood in this caring, empathetic, sensitive talk, delivered by someone who knows.
Talk 2: 10 ways to understand each other (10:30-11:30am)
A mutual approach looking at understanding each other's needs and preferences and the ways that two people can work together and make compromises so as to have a better relationship. This talk is suitable for any relationship in which one person is autistic and the other is not, such as parent/child, friends or couples.
Talk 3: How to be a more effective communicator (11:45am-12:45pm)
Lots of people think they're good at communicating when really they're not! Being a good communicator is a valuable skill that all people can work on and improve throughout their life. Learn about body language and tone of voice.  Learn how to improve and adapt communication to get the best out of the important people in your lives. This talk will cover adaptations people can make to the way they communicate, to better connect with the autistic person they know. It'll also give autistic people some ideas on the things they can do when communicating with other people too.
Talk 4: Helping autistic people become more productive and efficient: a look at executive function (1:30-2:30pm)
Executive function is the set of mental skills that help people get things done. The skills include: working memory, organisation, planning, prioritising, starting and completing tasks, flexible thinking and impulse control. Executive function is often impaired in autistic people and has big consequences on all aspects of their life. 'Difficult' and 'challenging' behaviours can be caused by impaired executive function. Discover strategies to improve it and enjoy being more productive and more efficient.
Video: A Day At Secondary School For The Girl With The Curly Hair (2:45-3:30pm)
Your chance to watch a short film written and directed by Alis Rowe, autistic woman and founder of The Curly Hair Project, with time for discussion and review of the film afterwards.
