Event description
This workshop is aimed at keen beginners and intermediate-level students wishing to improve their painting skills and explore different styles and methods of watercolour painting. The course will cover the following areas: painting materials and equipment; preliminary drawing in pencil; direct painting with the brush; the controlled wash; using a limited palette; tonal painting; understanding paper weights and surfaces; understanding brush types and sizes. We shall explore a range of methods and techniques and compare and contrast the working methods of various different artists.
There will be a practical painting exercise with guidance provided by the tutor followed by a constructive appraisal of each students' work 
We will meet at the Crypt Gallery in the Cathedral Close, and paint within confines of the Close
You will need to bring with you - materials list:
Lightweight chair or stool (if sitting to paint)
Lightweight watercolour easel
Lightweight drawing board (to support paper if using loose sheets)
4 no. sheets 11" x 15" (approx) rough and/or cold pressed watercolour paper, 190 lbs/300 gsm and/or 300 lbs/425 gsm.  Saunders Waterford or similar good-quality brand. Either loose sheets (to be attached to drawing board with masking tape) or blocks (in which case there is no need for a drawing board or other support)
Masking tape
Kitchen roll/sheets of thick paper towel
Water container (ideally large collapsing plastic type and can be attached to easel)
Watercolour palette with large mixing wells and slots to hold paint from tubes
Tubes of watercolour paint (preferably artists quality). Recommended to include:
- cadmium yellow pale (or cadmium yellow light) Recommended
- raw sienna - essential

- burnt sienna - essential
- burnt umber - recommended
- cadmium red - recommended
- alizarin crimson - recommended 
- ultramarine blue - essential
- cerulean blue or winsor blue (green shade) - recommended
Selection of good quality paint brushes in good condition with sharp points. Recommended to include:
- 1 no. sable (and/or high quality synthetic) traditional mop brush 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" 
- 2 no. sable (and/or high quality synthetic) round brushes 7/8" & 1 1/8"
Pencil (preferably automatic type), B or 2B grade
Kneadable putty rubber
Small pocket sketchbook (for preliminary thumbnail pencil sketches)
