Being at Your Best When the Kids are at their Worst: The Simple Classroom Approach to Emotional Self-Regulation   This is a full day conference (from 9 to noon when we break for a catered lunch and then reconvene the workshop from 1 to 3 PM).  In the morning lecture (from 9 to noon) we will look at how to stay engaged on the often frustrating and unpredictable “classroom dance floor” while at the same time watching from the calm and loving “teachers balcony.” Specifically we will explore  • What prevents us from being at our best? • If it’s hysterical, it’s historical. Finding our own voice. • Rediscovering the gift of a normal day. • Feeling seen and valued by the class. The presentation culminates in learning a simple and moving visualization that puts your hands back on your educators “emotional driving wheel”, opening up a whole new range of responses that connect you to the kids. In afternoon workshop (from 1 to 3 PM) we take A DEEPER DIVE INTO EMOTIONAL SELF REGULATION: Making A Small Do-Able and Powerful Plan That Works. We explore: • How to shift taking it personally. • No more nagging and repeating yourself. • Feeling the freedom to be direct and intense rather than frustrated and angry. • Breaking out of old unwanted emotionally triggered pattern. • Attuning to the early warning signs of escalation. • Use what was great about our own childhood school experiences, toss out the rest. • Sort out what is the “Magnetic North” of mass popular culture vs “True North” of your classroom values. At the heart of this workshop is learning Compassionate Response. This is a tried and proven practice that directly works to break us out of old unwanted patterns of escalating action – reaction patterns with your children, tweens and teens, and frees us to find our own voice -- right in the moment when we need it most.
