Use social media and other techniques to engage audiences authentically and produce impactful journalism
Class meets from 6:30 to 9 pm on Wednesdays April 10 and April 17.
The cost for this workshop is $250, $200 early bird rate before February 1
Audience engagement goes beyond posting great stories on social media. In this workshop we will explore journalism that truly builds a bridge to the audience and invite them to participate in stories.
Few people do this type of journalism better than the pros at ProPublica. They reached out to such diverse communities as veterans exposed to Agent Orange, women who almost died in childbirth and tech workers victim of age discrimination. Thanks to the input of these communities, journalists have been able to investigate issues like never before and have produced award-winning pieces. Adriana Gallardo will share her experience at ProPublica, her technique when it comes to crowdsourcing projects and her philosophy on engagement. She will cover:

About Adriana Gallardo
Adriana Gallardo is an engagement reporter at ProPublica, where she works to cultivate communities to inform coverage. Last year, she reported for the “Lost Mothers” series, which illuminated a national disgrace: The U.S. has the worst rate of maternal deaths in the developed world, and up to 60 percent of those deaths are preventable. This series won the 2018 Goldsmith Prize for investigative reporting, received a George Polk Award, a Peabody and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for explanatory reporting.
Gallardo has long specialized in community journalism. Prior to ProPublica, she oversaw a national reporting series at 15 public media stations. In 2014, she travelled the country with the StoryCorps mobile booth collecting over 400 stories archived at the Library of Congress. In her hometown Chicago, she spent over a decade working as a media educator, journalist and radio producer.
