Event description
Announcing Palmetto Bug Stomp! April 5-7, 2019
What do you get when you combine great music, great callers, great dancers, and Charleston, SC? You get Palmetto Bug Stomp, where we strive to increase the fun every year.
Speaking of combinations, this year we have Wake Up Robin, a tasteful and tuneful blend of Great Bear and Free Raisins. Joining them is the phenomenon known as Toss the Possum. Add these together and it equals a musical sensation like no other. But we’re not done with addition yet, because we’ve got the callers to bump this weekend into a whole new magnitude. The great Will Mentor will be calling along with the mega-talented Diane Silver. To make sure you catch every note and every syllable, we will have Ed Howe and the Sound of Perfection crew mixing the music and the voices for a seamless sonic experience.
PBS has been selling out faster and faster every year, so please do not wait to sign up! We will work to find housing with local dancers on a first-come, first-served basis. That's right: free housing in beautiful Charleston, SC, while supplies last. We also have a limited number of discounted hotel rooms nearby if that is more your thing. See below for more details.
Early bird prices until February 28th!
Fresh fruit snacks provided throughout the weekend.

Is this dance gender-balanced? (Meaning equal numbers of men and women)
By overwhelming demand, The Palmetto Bug Stomp is a gender-balanced event. Sign up with a partner to avoid being waitlisted.
Do you have any volunteer opportunities?
If you're looking for a cheaper option and you're willing to work, we have some volunteer slots available. In exchange for a mega-cheap ticket (just $45!) you will be expected to work 8 hours throughout the dance weekend. To apply, please contact our volunteer coordinator, Lisa McQuade, at glowinglotus189@ by text at (843) 277-5879.
Can you help me find a place to stay?
Limited housing with generous local dancers is provided on a first-come-first-served basis. Get your tickets first, then contact us at to inquire.

Failing that, Charleston is a tourist town with a bewildering array of hotel and AirBnB options at all price points. We have a discounted block of rooms at one nearby hotel, and can recommend some other places and campgrounds as well. We made a list of recommendations you can download as a Word document here.
Can I buy tickets just for Friday or Saturday night?
Unfortunately, that is not an option. But feel free to come to any of our monthly dances from our Facebook or Charleston Folk website!
I signed up for the dance, but now I cannot attend. Do you offer refunds?
So sorry to hear that! You sure are missing out! Our refund policy states we charge a $15 cancellation fee for refunds. After March 1, 2019, we will not offer a refund unless there is a waiting list. After April 1, 2019, we do not offer refunds for any reason. For cancellations, contact us at palmettobugstomp@ we will do our best to forge a fair outcome for all concerned.
Is this open to the public? I have a friend who really wants to try contra.
This is a full-weekend, high-level dance geared toward experienced dancers. Beginners will have a much better time at our bi-monthly Friday dances instead: find us on Facebook or the Charleston Folk website for more information.
How excited should I be about this dance?
I might be biased, but I'd be pretty stoked about this dance weekend if I were you. The line-up is stellar, the setting is delightful, and our community is warm and welcoming. It's gonna be a grand time! But don't just take my word for it, check out this video (respectful credit goes to David Frantz, who does a fantastic job).
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
You do not, but it speeds up the sign-in process if you do. (We can also scan your ticket from your smart device, so that's a paper-saving option.)
Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
All relevant/irrelevant questions about 2019 Palmetto Bug Stomp can be directed to palmettobugstomp@ see our Facebook page or the Charleston Folk website for the full weekend schedule, relevant links, and latest information.
See you on the dance floor!
