Full day event with our fabulous guest instructor, Jen Kettell (bio below) with morning breakfast snacks, coffee & tea, and box lunch provided.
CEUs available for MCLP, MCA, AOLCP, & MCH

Doors open at 7:30 AM for registration, networking and breakfast snacks.
The lecture begins promptly at 8:00 AM.

Three-part training day
Roots & Soils - Lecture and hands-on practicum cover root types, soil types, drainage, pH, NPK, fertilizing, composting, mycorrhizae, and mulching. We will dive into a discussion of soil testing and how to interpret your results to formulate an action plan.
Pruning Lecture - Lecture covers pruning different tree and shrub varieties at different stages of maturity, pruning objectives, appropriate tools & *PPE for personal safety, biology, natural selective pruning, and a useful 10-step guide (available 2 weeks before - password provided for access with every ticket).
*NOTE - ALL attendees must have the following PPE & tools to attend the field workshop noted will be for sale for those who do not have them.

**Pruning Workshop - Hands-on practicum will be held after lunch. It begins with a short demonstration, then attendees will be divided into small groups to hone the following skills:

Rejuvenation of old shrubs
Structural pruning young plants
Making the right cut when the branch collar is hard to spot
Identifying and correcting girdling roots
Reviewing early-blooming shrubs
Making a clean cut every time

**NOTE - Workshop portion of the course will be at a site roughly 15 minutes from the training classroom. Address and directions will be handed out at the lecture portion of the training.
RAIN DATE:  In case of severe inclement weather, the entire workshop will be rescheduled for the following week, Wednesday, April 3rd. Please keep this date open. Note: we will prune in a drizzle, light rain, cold, landscape pros after all!

Jen Kettell is a certified arborist and horticulturist serving the New England area. For more than a decade, she worked as a staff horticulturist at Harvard University’s Arnold Arboretum. Now she shares her passion for horticulture through the training she provides to both homeowners and green industry professionals. Currently, she is a consultant for The Trustees’ public gardens, and a guest lecturer and trainer at the University of Massachusetts, the Arnold Arboretum, and the International Society of Arboriculture.
In addition, she collaborates with other professionals through volunteer appointments on the Landscape Advisory Committee for the Wakefield Estate and Arboretum and the Board of Directors at Stearns Organic Farm.
