Coming Home
“You are like a dragon swimming in the water
or a tiger reposing in the mountains.” Eihei Dogen
While many factors are conducive to feeling at home in this world—among them a stable household, a safe neighborhood, financial well-being, and wholesome relationships, ultimately being at home is a practice.

We practice making ourself at home in our body, making ourself at home in our mind, at this place, at this time.We study making ourself at home with thoughts, feelings, sensations, emotions.
Sitting, indoor and outdoor walking, along with qi gong. With some possible tools and resources, some views andteachings—including the utter impossibility of getting theworld to be invariably to your liking—let’s practice doingthis together—being at home in the here-and-now, at home  on the groundless ground. Welcome.

Edward Espe Brown was ordained in 1971 by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, who gave him the Dharma name Jusan Kainei, which means “Longevity Mountain, Peaceful Sea.”
Edward has been practicing Zen since 1965 and also has done extensive vipassana practice, yoga, and chi gung.  He leads regular sitting groups and meditation retreats in Northern California and offers workshops in the U.S. and internationally on a variety of subjects, including cooking, handwriting change, and Mindfulness Touch.  Edward is an accomplished chef, who helped found Greens Restaurant in San Francisco and worked with Deborah Madison in writing The Greens Cookbook.  Edward’s other books include The Tassajara Bread Book, Tassajara Cooking, The Tassajara Recipe Book, and Tomato Blessings and Radish Teachings.  He also edited Not Always So, a collection of Suzuki Roshi’s lectures.  In 2007, Edward was the subject of a critically acclaimed feature-length documentary film entitled How to Cook Your Life, directed by Doris Dörrie. His new book, No Recipe: Cooking as a Spiritual Practice, published by Sounds True, came out in May 2018.

Details to Consider

Bring a covered mug or water bottle, special writing materials (if you have them), a bag lunch and your personal cushion if you have one.
Chairs and cushions will be available at the retreat, as well as tea and hot water.
In the spirit of doing no harm, we ask that you refrain from using scented products that may affect others.  The Dharma Center is wheelchair accessible.
SBMG hosts teachers from all Buddhist traditions at weekly meetings and monthly daylong retreats.  All have been welcome since 1991.  SBMG is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
Please contact registrar if you have any questions.
Note that only covered containers of water are allowed in the meditation hall.

"Dana" is the Pali word for generosity and is the first paramita in Buddhism.  You will be invited to give an additional teacher donation on the day of the retreat to thank and honor the teacher yourself as these teachings are priceless and freely given by the teacher (meaning they don't charge a specific fee).
