Event description
The inaugural Septima P. Clark Poetry contest is being coordinated by MUSC's Office of Student Programs and Student Diversity and the MUSC College of Health Professions in collaboration with Charleston’s First Poet Laureate Marcus Amaker. The poetry contest is open to youth in the community with categories for elementary school (K-5), middle school (6-8), and high school (9-12) age students. Prizes will be available for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each category.
This contest honors Charleston native and civil rights advocate Septima P. Clark for her dedication to service, education, and equality.  As such, poems should feature these themes. Submissions will be open from February 1, 2019 thru April 15, 2019. Winning poems will be announced in late April 2019, and winners will be invited to read their poems at this on-campus event open to the public at MUSC on Friday, May 3, 2019.  RSVP is required for the Awards Ceremony.
For questions or more information, please contact Dr. Cristina Reyes Smith at smithcris@musc.edu or call at 843-792-0701.
