Event description
When the remains of 36 individuals were unearthed at the Gaillard Center in 2013, so were a mountain of questions: Who were these people? How did they come to be buried here? And most importantly—what are their stories?
Historical, archaeological and ongoing DNA research tells us that these 36 women, men and children were buried between 1750 and 1800. Some were born in Africa and others were born South Carolina.
Our Charleston ancestors WOKE to remind us of our shared PAST and to proclaim their humanity. We rebury them with dignity and honor in the PRESENT. They inspire us to create a FUTURE of greater reconciliation, truth, equity and healing.
On this momentous occasion we will honor and remember our collective ancestors. Drums will be heard echoing through the streets of Ansonborough as we process towards the reinterment site. Community members will have an opportunity to pay their last respects to the 36 individuals prior to the poring of libations, talks, dances, masquerades and songs. We will make a joyful noise as we celebrate the lives of these individuals and those whose graves have been lost.
