Event description
Cutting down healthy trees doesn't create healthy forests. This is what the NJ DEP plans to do in our northern NJ forests and throughout the state.  Join Author and Forest Ecologist, Dr. Joan Maloof, Director of the Old Growth Forest Network on Thursday May 9th, when she discusses her research on the importance of our Old Growth Forests. Learn about the value of maturing and existing Old Growth Forests for carbon sequestration, species diversity and soil microbial health.
Also, learn how forests contains species that are unaccounted for by the "naked eye" and how these mycorrhizal communities are so important to the total overall health of the forest ecosystem.
Additionally, this lecture is an opportunity for our group to obtain much needed donations to assist in the further protection of Sparta Mountain and other NJ Public Open Spaces.  Your generous donations will enable us to fund, for example, the much-needed amphibian vernal pool habitat study on Sparta Mountain. In addition, further hawk and endangered species studies will be performed through your generous donations. We will continue to be advocates for Sparta Mountain and for all of NJ’s Public Lands and appreciate your support in these efforts.
Thank you and see you on May 9th!  Seating will be limited so reserve your spot now!
