How Do Intermediaries Build Inclusive Markets? The Role Of The Social Context
Intermediaries build inclusive markets by developing capabilities among marginalized groups and by negotiating more supportive social contexts. Existing literature suggests that intermediaries’ approaches must be finely tuned to local social realities throughout this process. Yet theoretical accounts of how intermediaries respond to the social context vary, and we know little about the underlying mechanisms through which intermediaries negotiate the social context and build inclusive markets. The purpose of this study is to develop a contingent view of intermediaries’ efforts to build inclusive markets that explores the role of the social context. Specifically, we examine how two critical features of the social context – inequality and interdependence – influence the process by which intermediaries build inclusive markets. Using an in-depth qualitative study of intermediaries in India, we examine the distinct approaches used by intermediaries and the outcomes associated with different configurations of inequality and interdependence within the social context. Our study contributes to the literature by suggesting a contingent view of the process by which intermediaries build inclusive markets that takes into account the role of the social context.
