Machine Visions and Eyeless Sight: On Art, Photography and Artificial IntelligenceSymposium at the Whitworth Gallery (Study Centre), University of ManchesterFriday 24th May 2019,13.30–18.30
Please join us for lunch and an afternoon of art, insight and discussion at the Whitworth on the implications of AI-driven machine vision.
Description
From the tracking of consumer behaviour in shops to the navigation of driverless cars to the identification of targets for drone strikes, our society is increasingly impacted by “machine vision”. These photographic technologies use Artificial Intelligence to produce algorithmically-operationalised images that automate numerous tasks, processes, and functions previously undertaken or overseen by humans and they do so largely according to hegemonic power structures. A central political challenge thus becomes how to regulate these life-shaping, automated, ‘black box’ processes. How can eyeless sight be (over)seen? Is human vision adequate to this task or itself compromised by a problematic anthropocentrism? Might nonhuman vision be affirmed?  Responding to these fundamental and growing challenges the artist Trevor Paglen’s recent Machine Visions series has explored how sight has become automated and operationalized within larger imaging systems. This symposium, inspired by Paglen’s recent work (which the artist presented in a linked talk ‘Machine Visions’ on 29 April at the Whitworth), brings together a number of leading thinkers and artists to explore responses to the implications of AI-driven machine vision.
