Event description
The Genetics Society is a learned society with the mission to support and promote the research, teaching and application of genetics. The Society was founded in 1919 by William Bateson, ably abetted by Miss Edith Rebecca Saunders, as one of the world’s first society devoted to the study of the mechanisms of inheritance. The first meeting, held at the Linnean Society in London on the 25th of June of 1919, was presided by the Earl of Balfour. To celebrate the date, we have organised a birthday party that we very much hope you will be able to attend. William Bateson was the Director of the John Innes Horticultural Institution at the time that the Genetics Society was founded and therefore our birthday party will be held on the 25th of June 2019 at the John Innes Centre in Norwich. On the day we are planning to hold a series of special events:
2.00pm – Exhibition, arrive anytime from 2.00 onward to see an exhibition including items from the Genetics Society archive4.00pm - Unveiling of blue plaques for William Bateson and Edith Rebecca Saunders4.30pm - Centenary Medal Lecture by Sir Paul Nurse
Celebrations will be hosted at John Innes Conference Centre (Norwich Research Park, Colney Ln, Norwich NR4 7UH).
