Event description

Based at Morley College London, Morley Medieval was founded in 1985, in response to requests from students of medieval art for ways of extending the range of their studies. The Society hosts guest lectures in the Autumn and Spring terms by leading scholars on a wide range of research topics. Cultural visits are arranged during the summer months.
Annual Membership from September 2017 is £10; to enquire about becoming a member please contact the Membership Secretary, Marion Winwood at marion@, or Basement Flat, 244 Randolf Avenue, London W9 1PF.
Lectures are held in B13 at Morley College London. From Autumn 2018 doors open at 5.30pm for a 6.00pm start. These are ticketed at £5 and sold on a first come, first served basis. Summer Programme 2019
10 August: A day trip, led by Richard Halsey, to 5 churches in Bedfordshire: St Thomas of Canterbury, Clapham, SS Mary at Oakley and Felmersham, All Saints, Turvey and St Mary, Stevington. A coach starts from Bedford station at 1030, and will return by 1815. Cost: £42, including refreshments at Oakley and Stevington. 21st-27th June: A Continental tour, based in Medieval Le Mans, to include visits to sites on the Loir and Sarthe; with a focus on the Romanesque and a wealth of wall painting.
22nd August: Day visit to Framlingham & Orford Castles, led by Dr Jeremy Ashbee.
13th October: John Goodall, Country Life English Architecture in the reign of Edward IV                          Preceded by the AGM, at 5.30, also in B13.
10th November: Dr Michael Carter, FSA, Senior Properties Historian, English Heritage Abbots and Aristocrats: Patronage, Art and Architecture at Hailes Abbey
8th December: Dr Andrew Gray Monks at Arms – Puzzles of Monastic Heraldry

19th January: Lloyd de Beer, Ferguson Curator of Medieval Europe, British Museum English Alabaster Sculpture in Context 1350-1603.
16th March: Dr Sally Dormer, V&A Year Course Director & Independent Scholar 'A City Renowned Throughout All Britain': Medieval Durham.
16th May: Nicola Lowe, PhD Candidate, Birkbeck, University of London Monumental Marginalia: Margaret Oddingsell's Stone Prayer Book at Cogges. Please note new date - original event, due on 28th February, was postponed due to the inclement weather conditions.
19th May: Oxfordshire Churches I. Starting at Oxford Station at 1045, a day trip led by Richard Halsey. We shall visit St Peter's, Cassington, St Mary's, North Leigh, St Laurence, Cogges and St Michael's, Stanton Harcourt, with a break for lunch [not included] in Witney. Cost: £39.
23rd-27th July: 5 days in Durham, with visits, both local and further afield.
11th August: Oxfordshire Churches II. Starting at Oxford station at 1045, there will be another day trip led by Richard Halsey. Visiting St Mary's, Uffington, St Margaret of England, Little Faringdon, St Matthew's, Langford and St Mary's, Bampton, with find-your-own lunch in Faringdon. Cost: £46.50.
5th Oct.: AGM, at 5.00, followed by: Richard Halsey, Oxford Cathedral: Reflections Following Recent Works.
9 Nov.: Dr Holly James-Maddocks, The Illuminators of the Middle English Poetic Tradition.
12 Dec.: Dr Marian Campbell, Why Limoges? The taste for Limoges enamels in Medieval England.

8 Feb.:   Dr Kirstin Kennedy, Curator, Sculpture, Metalwork, Ceramics & Glass Dept. (Metalwork Section), V&A Museum, ‘If you had … whiskers, it would give them a distinct curl’: Walter Leo Hildburgh’s enthusiasm for medieval Hispanic silver and his gifts to the Victoria and Albert Museum.
8 March: Chrys Plumley, Independent Researcher, An Heraldic Mantle for Lady Catherine Clopton.
5 April:   Dr Anya Heilpern, Research Affiliate, History of Art Dept., University of York, ‘Souvent me souvient’: Remembering Lady Margaret Beaufort’s painted glass in Cambridge.
2 May: Following on from the lecture on 8 Feb., Dr Kirstin Kennedy has arranged two handling sessions of Medieval Silver at the V&A. Please contact Felicity Shepherd [felicitysshepherd@btinternet.com] for further details.
18 May: A day trip to more Oxfordshire churches with Richard Halsey, starting from Banbury station at 1045. We will visit St Mary, Broughton, St Peter, Hook Norton, St Michael, Barford St Michael, finishing at St Mary, Bloxham and returning to Banbury by 1800.
