Event description
Since high blood pressure and atrial fibrillation (AF) often have no symptoms, Surrey Heartlands is offering free BP+ checks to NHS staff increase the detection of individuals with high blood pressure and AF. High blood pressure is a contributing factor in around half of all strokes and it is estimated that 20% of strokes a year are caused by AF. With that in mind, there is a potential to prevent strokes by identifying individuals with high blood pressure or AF.
The BP+ session itself will last 10-15 minutes and consist of an explanation of the service, 3x blood pressure measurements, a manual pulse check and potentially a lead 1 ECG using the AliveCor device (depending on the outcome of the manual pulse check). Your results and any relevant referrals or follow up actions will be explained to you and documented on your results card, which you will be provided at the end of the session. If appropriate, you may also receive lifestyle advice to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
