Event description
When children draw trains, you'd be hard pressed to convince them to leave out that special plume from the smokestack. Likewise, elementary school houses rarely come without their requisite chimney and puffs. Gainsbourg thought that God smoked "Havanes" or "Gitanes" and his goddesses - the early 20th century femme fatales - were indeed often surrounded by a vaporous halo. Point is, humans produce smoke, smoke produces metaphor, and metaphor is a friend to perfumery. We modestly propose that everyone working with scent should be fluent in the hows and means of this crucial fragrance here to help! In the new 'meet a material' class series, IAO's very own independent perfumer Ashley Eden Kessler provides an accessible monthly exploration of a set of materials related to a fragrance family, for people at all levels of perfumery. In these 2.5 hour sessions, attendees will spend their time smelling, discussing and learning about three crucial aromatics - natural and synthetic - commonly used in modern perfumery's most important families and fragrance types. This ongoing series of classes will not only give attendees an absolute fluency in perfume, but will teach us to be precise, considered and analytical with our materials, through organoleptic assessments, and important health and safety regulations . This while we hone our noses as we work through the families and fragrance types most crucial to a perfumer's organ. This month's class will give a detailed exploration of three materials in the smoke family: Birch tar, cade, guaiacol.

When we host a class or workshop, we often order the materials to be used in the class well in advance, based on how many people have signed up (and padding a bit for safety). We also use class proceeds to pay our teachers. Although we realize that life has a funny way of getting in the way of the best laid plans, as a small non-profit we cannot afford to carry the burden of lost proceeds and materials. With that in mind, here is our refund policy:
– Cancellation with refund or credit requests made 2 weeks or more (14 days) before the scheduled class will be honored with gusto! We’ll miss you, but will 100% refund your spot, or give you credit for another class. – Refunds or class credits requested less than 14 days before the scheduled class: We will refund you 50% of your class fee. Why? Because we’ve already ordered the materials. – Refunds or class credits requested less than 48 hours before the class, on the day of the class or after the class has happened will not be granted.
Note also that event tickets are non-transferable.
