Event description
On the 21st of May 2018, I lost someone very close to my heart. Tommy was a young, funny, cheeky and caring young man with such a big heart for anyone. We shared many memories together both laughter and tears and he was a massive part of my life for a long time. He was such a motivated, charismatic and loving young man with so much potential. We spent months being totally inseparable and had the best time at school and lit up any room he was in. He made such a boring time of our lives happy and exciting and constantly put anyone else's needs before his own. We all loved him dearly and appreciated what he brought to all of our lives. He certainly was a ray of sunshine in everyone's lives and is still a massive inspiration to all of us.
Unfortunately, like many young men, Tommy fought a long battle with his mental health and was secretly struggling for a long time. Whilst close family and friends were aware of this we had no idea how bad things had got for him. Like many men, Tommy was unable to access to necessary support to help him recover and continue on with his precious life. This is something that many men struggle with day to day and something that needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency.
I am so honoured to be able to have spent some of the best times of my life with Tommy, and I miss him more and more everyday. Since losing Tommy, I have experienced the hardest times of life. Struggling with depression, anxiety, self harm and experiencing the troubling thoughts associated with that I have a much broader understanding for the lack of resources and funding. Whilst this was already a massive issue close to my heart as a result of losing Tommy, I have no experienced it first hand and understand the severity of this issue.
I feel so grateful that Tommy touched my life as he did with many others and so heartbroken that he at the time was unable to see his own worth and brilliance. I am doing this event to try and raise some money to support young men in their often unnoticed mental health struggles. This is something that can't go ignored because the pain and destruction it causes in the process and the aftermath is totally life changing. Young men should not be able to find themselves in this position and it is vital we support them in the best way we can.
I thank you Tommy for all the laughter and happiness you brought for so many, despite your own personal battles. And for remaining an inspiration to us all. Thank you for being the amazing young man you were and having such a massive impact on my life.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story, I hope you can appreciate the importance of this issue, any donation is another step in the right direction, many thanks, Niamh.
