Event description

To celebrate the permaculture food forest's fifth birthday at Bay Haven Elementary School, we scheduled tours during the school day to enable visitors to hear from Bay Haven students, families, and staff. Join us on Tuesday, October 22 from 10:00am - 12:00pm to witness the incredible impact here.
This edible landscape provides our students, staff, and families with fresh fruit and other edibles such as moringa and perennial spinaches in addition to serving as an outdoor learning space.  Students learn life science topics such as life cycles, plant reproduction, and soil ecology, create art work inspired by the various plants and animals, and enjoy a small, quiet oasis in the center of the campus.
The food forest is an integrated living system.  The plants and animals support each other to create a dynamic, biodiverse ecosystem that hosts numerous plant and animal species.  What a great way for elementary school students and their families to learn about eating local.
Using permaculture design principles as our guide, the Bay Haven food forest was envisioned, planned, and installed in 2014 with donations of time, labor, plants, refreshments and expertise from the following groups: US Green Building Council: Green Apple Day of Service, Slow Food Sarasota, Tropical Fruit and Nut Society, Food and Nutrition Services of Sarasota County School Board, Sarasota Bay and Estuary Program, Bay Haven Elementary School staff, students, and families, and McIntyre Elwell & Strammer General Contractors, Inc.
If you have questions about this event or what we have achieved in the garden, please contact more information.
Cost: FREE, Donations will be accepted on-site to support the Bay Haven School of Basics Plus.
RSVP: Online, guests must bring picture ID for a campus guest pass.
