Making criteria ‘clear in advance’ is not just about posting criteria on the VLE in a timely fashion. Regardless of the clarity of assessment criteria, students will be unlikely to see them as clear and transparent unless they are provided with opportunities to discuss and apply criteria and develop the capacity to make judgements about quality (Bearman & Ajjawi, in press). Students’ dissatisfaction with their marks and with feedback are often symptomatic of lack of understanding of the criteria prior to undertaking the task. In this workshop, you will explore activities and dialogues that support students in preparing for an assessment task, as well as broader activities that develop students’ ‘evaluative judgement’ (the capacity to understand and recognise quality in the context of their discipline and to apply criteria to judge the quality of their own work and that of others).
Learning outcomes:• Recognise the importance of developing students’ evaluative judgement;• Evaluate approaches to the development of students’ evaluative judgement;• Apply techniques for the development of evaluative judgement to one’s own practice;• Reflect upon one’s own evaluative judgement in the context of grading student work.
