Event description
OCTOBER IS LEARNING DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH
TRIUMPH IN LIFE, INC. TO HOST DYSLEXIC ACTOR OF FOX’***** TV SHOW
The goal is to raise awareness, reduce stigma and empower parents, students, and teachers. Triumph in Life, Inc. is hosting a free film screening (Normal Isn’t Real) and panel discussion lead by American Horror Story costar Ameer Baraka. Ameer will be joined by local successful Dyslexics, such as The LD Coach, Cindy Lumpkin, Founder of Triumph.
The screening and panel, sponsored in part by Fulton County, will benefit The Literacy Project of South Atlanta, an after-school reading program aimed at providing 1:1 reading instruction using the Orton Gillingham approach. This approach and the intensity in which it is implemented has been out of reach for many students due to cost.
“This month is more than simply planning activities to celebrate Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, rather it is about raising awareness, giving access and reducing stigma to allow children to get the supports they need to reach their full potential as learners,” said Cindy Lumpkin, Executive Director. “Most people don’t understand The Matthew Effect and how it’s playing out in our community, causing many to ultimately live below their potential.”
The stats

1 in 5 children in the U.S. have learning and attention issues
18.1% of students with LD drop out of school v. 6.5% of their non-disabled peers
55% of young adults with LD have been involved with the justice system
62% of students with LD will be unemployed a year after graduation
