Event description
Workshop Descriptor:
We need to prepare students for a future where they encounter more possibilities than probabilities. Although the research suggests that schools should be producing learners who are innovative, adaptable and resilient, with the ‘power to act’, there is no blueprint for how we do this as educators. Many schools and teachers are taking intentional steps to deconstruct the typical design, structures and systems of classrooms and curriculum. Concept-based curriculum, voice, choice and a focus on transdisciplinary skills and dispositions underpin many of these changes. Understanding the relationship between inquiry-based design, student efficacy and ownership can help us identify multiple ways to adjust inquiries to support student agency. This workshop examines ways in which educators can innovate and ‘play with’ inquiry to create small but powerful changes.
Participants will:

Deepen their own understanding of the relationship between concept-based inquiry and learner agency.

Understand how planning with a focus on concepts and the skills and dispositions of learning increase student ownership and efficacy

Develop their understanding of how to innovate with various aspects of inquiry in their current context of teaching and learning,  in order to develop an environment within which students can think and act as creators of their own learning.

Set short and longer term goals for implementing new understandings in their current context.

Audience:
This workshop is suitable for anyone with a basis in inquiry based teaching and who would like to explore ways to innovate their practice and share greater leadership for learning with students. It is appropriate for teachers of elementary or middle school students, and curriculum coordinators. Although the key learning will be highly relevant for anyone working within the IB frameworks, it will also be applicable to any setting working with an inquiry based framework or approach.
Workshop Facilitator: Julian Edwards
As an educator, Julian has been lucky enough to work in most sectors of schools including elementary/primary, secondary and special education as a teacher, curriculum coordinator, workshop leader and presenter,  and school leader. Julian has worked in secondary and special education in the UK and for twenty years in international schools including the International School of Tanganyika, Western Academy of Beijing and NIST International School in Bangkok. Julian is currently Head of Primary at the Inter Community School in Zurich. In each role, Julian has been involved with schools that have wanted to innovate for their circumstances and their students. As a result his personal passion is striving to develop and apply an understanding of how creative teaching and leadership develop the fullest capacity of individuals whatever their age. Having worked extensively with the IBO through workshop leading and involvement in curriculum development across all three programmes, Julian has a somewhat unique understanding of the curriculum continuum in international education. In addition to working with the IBO and developing learner-centred curriculum in his own schools,  Julian has been involved more recently with the UNESCO Happy School Project and presented regularly with IGE on professional areas including Project Based Learning and Inquiry, Creative and Personalized Leadership, and Coaching and Mentoring.
