University of Michigan School of Nursing Global Reproductive & Sexual Health Summer Institute
Offered by the University of Michigan, School of Nursing (UMSN), with faculty from across the health sciences, this third annual UMSN Global Reproductive and Sexual Health Summer Institute is designed to help participants gain a broad insight into contemporary issues in reproductive and sexual health. This short, intensive course will allow participants to gain the skills and knowledge to advance their inquiry in global reproductive and sexual health through a two-day conference followed by a five-day workshop. Participants may choose to attend the two-day conference only, or both the conference and the workshop.

May 7th - 8th, 2020: 2-day conference
Title: #UnfinishedAgenda: Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights for All
The two-day conference will focus on maternal health disparities globally and within the US, stigma and bias in reproductive health care, and the impact of current US policies domestically and globally on reproductive health with experts in the field presenting up-to-date research and practical clinical approaches to working with vulnerable populations.
Objectives:

Describe maternal health disparities in the US and globally
Understand how disparities and stigma influence maternal health outcomes

Discuss programs and interventions for reducing maternal mortality
Identify strategies to improve patient care experiences in reproductive health care domestically and globally
Discuss the role of nurses and midwives in reproductive health care
Understand US policies related to reproductive health care and their impact domestically and globally

Target Audience
This two-day conference is intended for, but not limited to: undergraduate and graduate students, nurses, midwives, social workers, physicians, junior faculty, post-doctoral fellows, researchers or investigators, and others with an interest in global reproductive and sexual health research.
 


May 11th – 15th, 2020: 5-day workshop
Title: Designing and Evaluating Culturally Appropriate Interventions to Improve Reproductive & Sexual Health
Building on the content from the 2-day conference, this 5-day workshop will give participants an opportunity to develop beginning competencies in the design and evaluation of culturally and developmentally appropriate interventions to improve reproductive and sexual health across a multitude of settings.
Objectives

Understand how to design impactful studies
Discuss different measurement aspects of a study
Understand the steps that are required when designing quantitative research studies
Describe the differences in quantitative research designs
Understand and articulate issues of reliability and validity
Explore the ethical issues associated with a range of research designs
Describe how to connect program objectives to key monitoring tasks
Develop a program monitoring plan with key essential components 

Target Audience
This five-day workshop is intended for, but not limited to: nurses, midwives, social workers, physicians, junior faculty, post-doctoral fellows, doctoral and master level students, researchers or investigators, ministry of health personnel, non-governmental organization monitoring and evaluation staff, and others with an interest in global reproductive and sexual health research and policy.
