Event description
The University’s new Honorary Doctor Masterclass series gets underway with a conversation with Scottish music composer, Patrick Doyle at Ayr Campus on Thursday 5th December, 6pm.

This is the first in a series of events that will take place at Ayr Campus and will see UWS Honorary Doctors from the creative industries discussing their careers in an informal setting with David Scott, Arts Lead in the School of Business & Creative Industries and a composer and broadcaster in his own right.

Patrick Doyle, who received an Honorary Doctorate from UWS in 2018, has scored over 55 international feature films.  A classically trained composer, he graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music in 1975, and was awarded a Fellowship of the Academy in 2001.

After composing for theatre, radio and television, Patrick joined the Renaissance Theatre Company as composer and musical director in 1987.  In 1989 director Sir Kenneth Branagh commissioned Patrick to compose the score for ‘Henry V’, for which he won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Film Theme.

Patrick is known for his work in many genres, including blockbusters such as ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, 'Thor', Disney Pixar's 'Brave', 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' and more recently Disney’s live action version of ‘Cinderella’, 'Murder on the Orient Express' and, soon, 'Death on the Nile'.  He has collaborated with some of the world's most acclaimed directors, including Brian de Palma, Robert Altman, Ang Lee and Alfonso Cuarón. He has received numerous international awards and nominations, not least the two Oscar Nominations for Best Original Score.

Patrick is also recognised for his concert pieces including ‘The Thistle and the Rose’ commissioned by HRH The Prince of Wales in honour of the Queen Mother’s 90th birthday. Most recently, his 'Scottish Overture' was given its first performance alongside the first live performance of the score for 'Brave' with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra for Celtic Connections 2019.
