Event description
A special three-day intermediate to advanced level masterclass with Richard Heeley, focusing on throwing, turning and decorating porcelain. Richard will discuss the characteristics, technology and history of porcelain, demonstrating techniques and strategies for success in throwing and turning. Richard will also demonstrate his blue and white under glaze technique, focusing on brushwork, mark making and pattern design using cobalt pigments.
Richard St John Heeley has 20 years experience teaching pottery at all levels. He has demonstrated and lectured to ceramic societies and universities around the country including at the V&A Museum. He is a full time professional potter exhibiting regularly around the UK and internationally. He is a selected member of the Craft Potters Association and currently runs a pottery at Hempmill Brook just outside Market Drayton.
Items to bring: Towel, apron, your own named tools and wheelbats if you have them, notepad, pen, means of getting your work home (e.g. cardboard crate)
Included: Tool kit plus 2 bags porcelain worth over £140*, lunch, refreshments, preferential discounts against all of our products.
*Porcelain Masterclass tool kit contains 25kg/2 bags of porcelain, a cutting wire, Mudtools flexible rib, angled sponge, Mudtools finishing sponge, a Japanese brush set (3pcs) and four 14" wheelbats. We reserve the right to make appropriate replacements of the same or higher value according to product availability. This tool set has been devised in collaboration with the course tutor. We regret we cannot accommodate requests for tool swaps. Other tools will be available to purchase from our showrooms, or please bring your own named equipment as stated above.

Food allergies must be notified at time of booking. Our caterers will do their best to accommodate your needs but in rare circumstances we may need to ask you to bring your own food for a small fee rebate in the form of a Potclays gift voucher.
Book early to avoid disappointment. This is a very popular course and due to the intensive nature of the tuition, places are restricted to a maximum of 10. 
Please look out for an email in the week prior to the course - it will contain important information so please ensure sales@ is added to your email 'safe list'.
Photography and filming takes place at all Potclays events. Material may be used publicly on social media and in Potclays marketing activity. If you have any concerns, please speak to a member of staff. 
There may be an opportunity during our 2 and 3 day courses to attend a factory tour (45-60mins) giving a unique insight into how Potclays clay is made. This tour will be entirely optional. Please contact us if you would like to check if a factory tour will be available during your course.

We will always make every effort to accommodate those with physical disabilities. Our factory is a very old and rambling building (it was a Victorian teapot factory in a former life) and access to our classroom, WC’s and upper showroom is only made possible through the use of temporary ramps. Please speak to us before booking a course place or visiting us so we can discuss how to best meet your needs.
Lunch will consist of a buffet prepared by The Quarter café in Piccadilly, Hanley. You must indicate any special dietary needs in the special instructions at checkout or send us a separate email. The Quarter are able to cater for the following special dietary requirements. Unfortunately, The Quarter cannot guarantee their food is free of nut traces. If you have dietary requirements outside of this list, please contact us.
