The Science of Mat Evaluations & Wheelchair Prescription
A stable and comfortable position in an appropriate wheelchair used for mobility is critical for comfort, health, productivity, and independence. Individualized seating and positioning systems can enhance breathing capacities, prevent complications of pressure sores, assist in decreasing pain and improve overall functional abilities of an individual. A wheelchair evaluation is a necessary part of the process to help sort through the various characteristics of a seating system to address an individual’s needs. This course provides attendees with an overview of the wheelchair evaluation process including the identification and application of seating and positioning concepts. Attendees will review the steps of an evaluation which include the identification of an individual’s unique abilities, medical and functional needs, lifestyle and environment.
Bariatric Seating, Positioning and Mobility
More than one third of the population of the United States is considered obese. Obesity-related medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke all lead to various levels of mobility impairment which leads the bariatric consumer seeking mobility aides and equipment such as wheeled mobility as an alternative mobility approach to ambulation. Along with the secondary medical complications listed above, traumatic injuries and neuromuscular disorders such as spinal cord injury, brain injury, muscular dystrophies, etc. that also present requiring equipment with higher weight capacities, pose multiple issues for the evaluator when going through the patient/product match. This course will discuss commonalties of the bariatric wheeled mobility user while highlighting some uncommon case studies to generate class discussion on products and solutions that produced good outcomes for the instructor and/or others who have problem-solved through the bariatric case scenario.
Clinical Considerations for Alternative Drive Controls
Assessing an end user for power mobility can be an intimidating task. Decisions that are made will have an impact on the individual’s quality life, functional mobility, physical well-being, and social interactions. When the end user is not able to utilize a standard joystick, then the task can become even more intimidating. There are many considerations and factors including driving/input method, mounting of driver controls, postural control, power positioning, programming, and environmental access/control. This workshop will review many of the considerations that must be examined when recommending alternative controls. Case specific examples will be utilized to elucidate the often-delicate interplay between alternative control access and complex seating system needs.
