Event description
Safeguarding Children: Designated Safeguarding Lead
For: Universal*
*Universal = Everyone working or volunteering with children in the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead/Designated Safeguarding Person
This training course is suitable to those who work in a ‘group setting’; specific training on designated person for childminders is also available on our Eventbrite Page.
Aims and Objectives
This course provides staff with the opportunity to explore and understand the role, responsibilities and legal duties of the Designated Safeguarding Lead within Early Years settings, and to support the development of the necessary skills and competencies to fulfil the role.
This is a full day course that introduces the role and responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead and supports the development of the skills and competencies necessary to fulfil the role. It approaches the theme from a practical perspective; encouraging participants to apply the content to their own situation throughout and drawing on lessons from real life examples and serious case reviews.
It supports the development of the necessary skills and competencies to effectively fulfil the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead as defined in Group 5 of the Leicestershire & Rutland Safeguarding Board’s (LSCB) competency framework. The trainer is an experienced safeguarding lead who has worked within a range of sectors and has also held allegations management responsibilities. All of this experience is brought into the training, dealing with the complexities of the role and of multi- agency working in a practical and down to earth manner.
Leicestershire County Council’s Early Years Inclusion and Childcare Service recommends for best practice that all Leicestershire Early Years Providers and Practitioners including Childminders and Out of School Clubs follow and adhere to The Safeguarding Children Competency Framework
The Competency Framework recommends that training/learning is attended every three years (minimum), and, best practice would be for this to be multi-agency training. As well as meeting the competencies within the Framework, attending multi-agency training will support with learning, networking and will allow organisations to better understand the roles of partner agencies. This particularly applies to those who carry out safeguarding assessments and investigations.
The Competency Framework acknowledges that in addition to traditional training events, there are different ways of learning and developing. Whilst training activities help to provide the knowledge and skills that contribute to staff being able to meet their competencies. Attending a training course does not automatically mean that the competencies will have been met - discussion and verification after the event may be required.
