Event description
Learn the tools and techniques needed to grow gourmet mushrooms on forest byproducts!
Shiitake mushrooms fruit naturally on oak logs in Japan during the Autumn tusnami season, when the temperatures drop and it rains, which is what happens about every few weeks all winter in our region, making the Georgia Piedmont a perfect environment for growing meaty, natural mushrooms in an extended season. Participants will work together in small groups, learning and practicing step-by-step inoculation of shiitake mushrooms on natural logs.
At the end of the workshop, every participant will take home one freshly-inoculated mushroom log, and have the opportunity to purchase additional inoculated logs at a discounted price, as well as fresh mushrooms from Trefoil Gardens.
*Purchase before 01/01/20 and receive a SECOND log at no charge! (presale special)
This is an outdoor event! Shiitake logs can weigh up to 15 lb, our drilling machines run at extremely high speeds, and hot wax can irritate your skin and damage your clothing. Please be prepared: Wear layers that you don't mind getting stained, and sensible, closed-toe shoes or boots. We will provide eye protection, which must be worn at all times. In the event of inclement weather, we will reschedule the event for March 7, 2020.
About Your Instructor: Rob Miller is a horticulturist, permaculturist, and naturalist. Since 2016, he has been teaching Sustainable and Organic Agriculture, and Apiary Studies at both College and University level. Rob was among the first Georgians to receive a Wild Mushroom Food Safety Certification., and  has been perfecting commercial mushroom cultivation techniques for this reigon since 2012.
