Event description
One to one personal online training session with a qualifed Mountain Leader to improve your map reading skills.

About this Event

This is a one to one personally tailored online session to help you develop your map reading skills. I'll spend 30 - 40 minutes with you via Google Meet to focus on those specific areas you want to develop.

This personal session is just that and we'll focus on your goals to develop your skills. If you have a specific area of focus that you want to improve then great - if, however, you aren't sure and want to generally improve your all round knowledge then I can help with a range of improvement options depending on how much experience you have.

There are a lot of skills and techniques in mountain navigation. Some of the areas of focus we could cover on a one to one basis include:

Introductory Elements

Types of maps, scales, map symbols, grid refs & orientation

Intermediate & Advanced Elements

Contours, relief interpreting the map, compass work, bearings and finding your location

Navigational Strategies

Timing, pacing, aiming off, attack points and countouring

GPS, apps and online mapping

We run this session at a time to suit you. Please, therefore, ignore the date quoted and get in touch to arrange a convenient time - email

The training is hosted online via Google Meet as a remote one to one session. After registration you'll be able to access the online event page which will have details about connecting to the session and what we need to make the session a sucess.

About me

I grew up in Hayfield at the foot of Kinder Scout where modern hillwalking was born when the mass trespass paved the way for the National Parks. I've therefore been walking and climbing since before I can remember! I’ve worked in the outdoors since 2006. You can find out more about me by visiting my website at
