*Cost: $600 per person for 4 sessions of online professional development. All materials are included. Administrators may accompany their registered participants to any or all sessions at no cost. 


 


 


 


Delivery Mode: Facilitated synchronous/asynchronous: teachers participate in four virtual live meetings scheduled on set dates and complete online modules at their own pace.

The ability to reason proportionally is the cornerstone of the middle school mathematics curriculum and a gateway to algebra. This four session course offers participants the opportunity to delve deeply into proportional thinking and examine how to develop this thinking in students.  Participants will examine how the progression of state standards define these essential concepts and competencies and highlight the relationship between linear functions and proportional reasoning. This online course supports teachers with strategies to help make this content accessible to all students, F2F and online. Participants will engage in modeled, research-based and classroom tested instructional practices that aim to develop students’ conceptual understanding and procedural fluency.


Participants will:


 



Explore and understand ratio as a relationship between two quantities


Explore and understand unit rate


Solve ratio problems


Solve real-world problems involving ratios using various representations, including tables, double number lines, and bar models


Make sense of proportional relationships


Determine if two quantities are proportional


Solve problems involving proportional relationships


Graph and interpret proportional relationships



 


Layered throughout the online course will be attention to instructional techniques including classroom discourse, collaborative learning, and formative assessment.  Reflection time will be provided for participants to discuss how these ideas will impact their classroom practice.


 


Audience: General and special education teachers, coaches, and administrators.


 


Time: All sessions will be held from 9 AM – 3 PM
