Clinical Assessment - Ankle/Foot
This course is split into two parts (Part a and b) and forms part of Phase 2 of the Musculoskeletal Remedial and Exercise Therapy course.
Phase 2: Module 5: Ankle & Foot

Structure of the Ankle & Foot
Anatomy of all ligaments, bursa, muscles, connective tissue, nerves and blood supply to the Ankle & Foot
Active, Passive, Active Resisted, and Clinical testing for the knee
Manual therapy techniques for the Ankle & Foot region
Exercise intervention of the Ankle & Foot - muscular endurance, strength, proprioception and functional tasks
All elements integrate the case history, pain science and tissue healing information and activities covered in phase 1


You will complete a worksheet that will introduce you to the anatomy and function of the Ankle & Foot

Part A
Part a) During the morning session you will:

Learn in-depth anatomy for the Ankle & Foot region:

Bones and bony landmarks: Tibia, Fibula, Tarsals, Metatarsals, phalanges
Joints: Inferior TibioFibular, Talocrural, Subtalar, Midtarsal, TarsoMetatarsal, Metatarsophalangeal, interphalangeal
Ligaments: Anterior and Posterior TaloFibular Ligaments (ATFL/PTFL), CalcaneoFibular Ligament (CFL), Deltoid Ligaments, Spring Ligament,
Compartments of the lower limb
Bursa: RetroCalcaneal Bursae
Movements of the Ankle & Foot Joints
Muscles: Tibialis Anterior/Posterior, Extensor Hallucis Longus, Extensor digitorum longus, Peroneus longus and brevis, Flexor digitorum longus, flexor hallucis longus, Gastrocnemius, Soleus

Blood Vessels and Nerves: Tibial, Peroneal, Medial and lateral plantar nerve pathways, Posterior tibial, dorsalis pedis artery

Part a) During the afternoon session you will:

Learn how to conduct clinical testing for the Ankle & Foot region including:

Active & Passive Range of movement testing
Active Resisted (Strength) testing
Clinical tests (Including the sensitivity and specificity): Windlass, Lateral squeeze, Thompsons, Cotton, Squeeze, External rotation stress test, Fibular translation, Talar tilt, Homans, Ottawa Ankle Rules, Knee to Wall (Dorsiflexion)
Please note: This course does allow you to diagnose Musculoskeletal conditions - the intention is to make sure you can provide a thorough assessment so you may refer onwards to a healthcare practitioner

Learn pathology of the Ankle & Foot region including; Plantar Fasciopathy, Mortons Neuroma, Achilles Tendinopathy, Bursitis, Hallux Valgus/rigidus, Syndesmosis, Ligament injuries, Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome, Compartment syndrome, DVT, Fracture

Part B
Part b) During the morning session you will:

Conduct a physical assessment for a case history with a Ankle & Foot injury
Learn soft tissue therapy and joint mobilisation techniques for the Ankle & Foot including: Prone, supine and side lying techniques, Neuromuscular technique (NMT), Soft Tissue Release technique (STR), Joint mobilisation techniques, Soft Tissue Massage (STM)

Part b) During the afternoon session you will:

Learn how to structure and plan an early stage exercise plan for someone recovering from an injury
Learn how to incorporate elements of pain science into your injury management

If you are completing the full diploma course you will be expected to reflect on the content of the Explain Pain and Tissue Healing days throughout your 200 hours of clinical practice and how you have used the skills/communication from those modules with real-life clients
