Behavioral Supports for Students in Secondary Educational Settings

This training is for professionals working with middle and high school students with ASD. It will include an overview of why common challenging behaviors occur and, with an understanding of these common functions of problem behaviors, participants will also be provided with a hierarchy of strategies and procedures for preventing and addressing them.

Participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding the importance of why problem behaviors may occur
  2. Identify strategies aimed at minimizing the escalation of problem behaviors
  3. Describe effective classroom procedures and strategies for managing a variety of challenging behaviors

About the Presenter

Elisa Cruz-Torres, Ed.D., BCBA-D earned her doctorate from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in Boca Raton, FL. Her areas of expertise are in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Emotional/Behavioral Disorders (E/BD), and Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). She is currently a Visiting Instructor at FAU where she prepares pre-service and in-service professionals to work with students on the autism spectrum and maintain effective classroom management. She is also the Verified Course Sequence (VCS) Coordinator for FAU’s ABA Program, serving as the liaison between the University and the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) and advises students seeking certification as a behavior analyst. Dr. Cruz-Torres consults and coaches families and professionals working with children and adolescents with autism and related disabilities. She has given numerous national and local presentations on utilizing evidence-based practices to support students with special needs in homes, schools, and the community.
